RFEM software was used to calculate the new cable car station of Zinsbergbahn in Brixen Im Thale, Austria.

The 'Zinsbergbahn' project was anything but ordinary and many challenges had to be overcome by the teams at Grabner Stahlbau.

The Grabner teams were responsible for the structural calculation, production, logistics, and assembly of this structure. The close collaboration between the different departments within the same company facilitated the realization of this project.

Structure and assembly

Of the entire project, the construction of the remarkable garage hall with a 30-meter cantilever supported by only 3 columns particularly attracted attention from the design phase.

Wind loads are relatively high on this 30-meter cantilever structure. To ensure its stability, the maximum deformation limits indicated by the equipment supplier should not be exceeded.

From a technical point of view, the use of large welded truss beams would have been simple, but it would not have been suitable for transportation and assembly.

Therefore, the Grabner Stahlbau team decided to develop individual elements adapted to the assembly and the route to be followed for transportation, while respecting the structural deformation requirements.

This resulted in a high requirement on tolerance limits for production, a specific assembly concept with additional (temporary) support columns, and specially created support zones with regard to the terrain slope. The project was carried out safely and on time, using mechanical shovels and cranes for lifting and assembly of the 30-meter-high frame.

The frame was calculated using RFEM and the verification module according to Eurocode 3 for steel beams.
