Integration of openBIM, GIS and digital twins for road management

06.01.2025

Road management is being revolutionized by the integration of openBIM and GIS, powered by digital twins. These cutting-edge technologies are redefining the way we design, build, and maintain roads, opening up new possibilities for enhanced efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

A road digital twin is a virtual representation of the physical road infrastructure, constantly updated with real-time data from sensors, IoT devices, and other sources. By combining BIM and GIS data, it provides a comprehensive and interactive representation, enabling smarter decision-making in asset management.

Implementing geospatial digital twins in road management brings several advantages such as the below:

·         advanced planning: visualization and simulation of design options before construction;

·         optimized asset management: real-time monitoring throughout the infrastructure lifecycle;

·         predictive maintenance: identification of patterns through real-time and historical data analysis;

·         improved safety: risk identification, traffic flow optimization, and enhanced emergency response;

·         data-driven decisions: support for investments, policy planning, and operational strategies;

·         efficient collaboration: centralized data sharing to enhance teamwork among stakeholders;

·         traffic optimization: simulations to improve road efficiency and circulation.

In a case study, a road digital twin, developed with the innovative technology usBIM.geotwin, demonstrates the potential of integrating BIM, IoT, and Facility Management (FM) within a Common Data Environment (CDE). By using a GIS-based territorial view, users can explore the openBIM road model in detail, visualizing elements such as signs and guardrails in IFC 4.3 format.

In this project, BIM objects receive data from IoT sensors and maintenance platforms, creating a geospatial digital twin that spans the entire lifecycle of the infrastructure. This integrated system allows for monitoring, simulation, and optimization of the road infrastructure, enhancing safety, efficiency, and reducing management and maintenance costs.

Moreover, the integration of openBIM-GIS with AI provides a more proactive and optimized approach to road maintenance.
