Grand Paris Express: Fayat Métal builds state-of-the-art infrastructure in Thiais

24.10.2024

The extension of line 14 South, and more broadly the Grand Paris Express project, is a response to the growing need for mobility in the Île-de-France region.

One of the key structures in this project is the Thiais - Pont de Rungis station, a modern and ambitious transport infrastructure. Fayat Métal Grands Projets, in collaboration with major players such as SYSTRA, Setec and RAZEL BEC, and under the direction of the RATP Group, has been awarded the contract to build the steel structure and enclosure of this emblematic station.

Characteristics of the structure :

• Length: 80 metres

• Width: 41.5 metres

• Height: 11 metres

• Weight of the structure: 400 tonnes

The structure rests on 3-metre-high lattice girders supported by concrete blocks or PRS caisson arches. These elements ensure the stability and strength of the structure, while providing an imposing and elegant design. Beneath these beams, a curved metal framework supports a remarkable nave-shaped ceiling, which is one of the highlights of the station's interior architecture.

The curtain walls are supported by tubular metal arches for the gables and PRS caissons for the long sides, giving the structure exemplary visual and structural cohesion.

Modelling and implementation

The success of a project of this scale depends not only on the precision of the construction, but also on the quality of the planning and modelling. Fayat Métal Grands Projets used bocad BIM software to model the entire steel structure. This powerful tool was used to

• Create accurate digital models

• Model the structure in 3D,

• Produce the IFC models for greater interoperability between the various parties involved in the project,

• Produce 2D drawing for the fabrication and erection,

• Compile all fabrications deliverables, guaranteeing a smooth, error-free production process.

This project demonstrates the importance of digitalisation and advanced modelling in modern construction, facilitating not only technical realisation, but also the continuous improvement of design and manufacturing processes.
